Q & A with Cheri Alguire: Growing Your Business

Q: "I've been a real estate agent for 18 months, and I'm looking to grow my business. I am considering bringing on a buyers' agent this summer, do you think that is a smart move?"

A: "Congratulations on your success in the first 18th months of your real estate career! Beginning your team is a good move, however, I would ask you to look at which position you should bring on to your team first. Many people want to bring on a buyer's agent because they feel that it would not cost them anything, and that the buyer agent would just bring business to the team. However, what most agents dont realize is that buyer agents usually want to join a team because they're not making it on their own. So they're looking for you to bring them leads, train them with basic sales skills, overcoming objections and converting new leads. What I would recommend is bringing on an administrative assistant. Someone who wants to grow your team with you. Someone who enjoys working behind the scenes, thus giving you more face to face time with clients, consequently allowing you to do more volume and easily pay their salary. Once your administrative assistant helps get you to a point where there are so many leads you cannot handle them, then you can bring on your first buyer agent."
